Colorado Marijuana Packaging & Labeling Rules: What’s Coming?

As a Colorado cannabis industry regulatory trainer and compliance consultant, I hear a lot of complaints.  Topping the list are that Colorado's marijuana regulations are ever-changing and overly complex.  As written, many rules appear to be subject to interpretation, and the Marijuana Enforcement Division (MED) is slow to respond to an ever increasing number of industry inquiries.

Well, I take a different view.  I believe that the MED has been outstanding in keeping up with industry growth and innovation.  Who could have predicted with the initial passage of Colorado's cannabis legislation, the staggering expansion of the industry, let alone the constant flood of new products and production processes available today?  What's more is that few should complain.  If the Federal Government had their way, there would be no marijuana industry.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions sent a shot across the bow of the US Cannabis Industry on January 4, 2018, by rescinding an Obama-era policy that paved the way for legalized marijuana to flourish in states across the country.

This move creates new confusion about enforcement and use across the US, including here in Colorado. While much is being said about Session’s big step backward, Governor Hickenlooper was clear about how to keep the Fed’s out of your marijuana business when he spoke with National Public Radios’, Ari Shapiro after the Sessions announcement. “Make sure that you comply with every (marijuana) regulation that we have, and really focus on doing this (growing and selling marijuana) the right way.”

MED Orders Special Testing

Special Microbial Contaminant Testing - Yeast and Mold

The Colorado Marijuana Enforcement Division (MED) has ordered a special microbial contaminant testing alert.  The alert affects all Retail Marijuana Cultivation (RMC) Licensees, and Retail Marijuana Manufacturing Facilities (RMPMF).  The alert was posted through a January 30, 2017 industry bulletin.   This action is being taken due to new data regarding the effectiveness of 3M Total Yeast and Mold Petrifilms in Marijuana.   To see the complete bulletin, click on the hyperlink at the end of this article.
